Kitchen volume measurements
A US cup is 236.6 ml, while the metric cup used in Australia, Canada and New Zealand is 250 ml. The difference is small for a single cup but adds up in big recipes. A US tablespoon is 14.8 ml (treated as 15 ml), a teaspoon is 4.9 ml (5 ml).
Quick reference
- 1 cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 8 US fl oz ≈ 237 ml
- 1 tbsp = 3 tsp ≈ 15 ml
- 1 US pint = 2 cups ≈ 473 ml, a UK pint is larger at 568 ml
- 1 quart = 4 cups ≈ 946 ml
- 1 liter ≈ 4 ¼ cups
Volume vs. weight
Volume converts directly only between volume units. To go from cups to grams you need to know the ingredient, because a cup of flour weighs half as much as a cup of sugar. Use the cups to grams converter for that.
