Butter measurements
In the US, butter is sold in sticks. One stick is ½ cup, 8 tablespoons, 4 ounces or 113 grams, and a pound box holds four sticks. The wrapper usually has tablespoon marks, so you can cut exactly what you need.
In Europe butter comes in 250 g blocks (in some countries 200 g or 125 g), so a European block is a little more than two sticks.
Quick reference
- 1 stick = ½ cup = 8 tbsp = 113 g
- 2 sticks = 1 cup = 16 tbsp = 227 g
- 1 tbsp = 14 g
- 100 g ≈ 7 tbsp ≈ ⅞ stick
- 250 g ≈ 2 ¼ sticks ≈ 1 cup + 1 ½ tbsp
Melted or softened?
The weight is the same whether butter is cold, softened or melted. Measure it before melting, because melted butter in a cup is harder to read.
